How long will a power station run a fridge?

A 1 kWh station runs a typical full-size fridge for about 12 hours. A 2 kWh station gets you through a full day. Here's every model we cover.

Runtime by station

Average draw, 85% AC efficiency. DC-only stations are left out because fridges need an AC outlet.

Why we use 70 W for a fridge

A full-size fridge draws 100 to 250 W while its compressor runs, but the compressor cycles on and off. Over a whole day a modern fridge averages roughly 40 to 85 W. We use 70 W as a typical figure. Older fridges and hot kitchens sit at the top of the range.

Find your fridge's real number

Look for the yearly energy figure on the Energy Guide label, in kWh per year. Divide it by 8.76 to get the average watts. A fridge rated at 600 kWh a year averages about 68 W.

Check the starting surge

A compressor needs two to three times its running watts for a split second to start, often 300 to 600 W. Stations with 500 W or more of output usually handle it; the smallest 300 W models may not. If you'll also run a microwave or kettle, add those watts too.

Make the battery last longer

Keep the door shut: a closed fridge stays cold for about four hours without power. Turn the thermostat up a notch, and plug the fridge in only for an hour or two at a time during a long outage.

Try your own fridge in the runtime calculator or size a full backup with the home battery size calculator.
