What to check for outages

Backup switching (UPS)

A station with UPS switching sits between the wall and your devices. When the power cuts, it takes over in a few milliseconds. Under 10 ms is enough for most computers and routers; 20 ms can be too slow for some desktop PCs.

Output for the big loads

Fridges, sump pumps and well pumps draw two to three times their running watts for a moment when they start. Make sure that starting surge is below the station's surge rating.

Expansion and recharging

For outages longer than a day, either add extra batteries or plan to recharge from solar panels. A station that refills from the wall in under an hour also helps when the power comes back briefly.

Never connect a power station to your home's wiring without a transfer switch installed by an electrician.
